Social Media and Politics in India

Posted by: Rohit In: Politics| Social Media

A few days ago I wrote about US Air Force using social media but today I got another good surprise. Much above what is expected in India, I landed on the site of Mr.L.K.Advani, the Prime Ministerial candidate of the BJP and the NDA for the 2009 elections to the Parliament of India.

To visit the site, click here. This is in addition to the official site of the BJP.

The site not oly contains information about BJP, NDA, Mr.Advani’s agendas for the upcoming elections, it goes a step further to include his speech(audio format),forums and a blog. The site has been there for some time now but the blog seems to be just a couple of days old, as of now it only contains a few posts but the response has been outstanding. The first post is dated 7th January(just 6 days back) and the number of comments itself display the amount of buzz it has created in the blogosphere. The traffic that this particular site is attracting can be judged by its alexa rank, which is 226,518(as of now).

 Some other similar initiatives are:

Social Media as defined by numerous people lay stress on engagement and conversation. Mr.Advani’s site is in these terms better than other similar portals as this offers much more opportunity for the visitor to interact, other than just consuming static information.

Initiatives like this make it more easy for people to realize the importance and the opportunities that Social Media Marketing brings with itself. Please understand when I say marketing, I am referring to any or all the activities which come under marketing starting from building relationships to selling. In my earlier posts, I have stressed upon the point that it’s high time people should start using social media for marketing their ideas/products/services et cetera and even today I believe, 2009 will see a lot of entities coming up with new ideas to leverage this space.

As for the 2009 elections, may the best candidate win…
