Social Media Marketing or Search Engine Marketing??

Posted by: Rohit In: Marketing| Social Media

With Social Media Marketing becoming the buzzword in the recent times, confusions have grown up regarding the importance of Search Engine Marketing. Everytime, someone suggests to you that your company should have a blog of your own where you should engage your customers and build your brand, doesn’t this question comes up in your mind…Why SMM now, i’ve already spent so much on SEO??? Till sometime back Internet startup’s used to charge huge bucks to get your website on the top charts of search engines. Why do they now want you to focus on SMM?

Dilemma…..SMM or SEO??

SMM is not an alternative to SEO…both of them must go hand in hand.

SMM ensures that you have a clientele who knows your products and services well and these people will act as your marketers for the prospective customers. The network of people you build through SMM does not always need search engine results to reach you but then, the number of customers who will come to you because they read your blog and they liked you will be far less than the other chunk of prospective customers. These people who are looking for sellers/service providers of a certain kind of product/service have a very high tendency to go by the search engine results.

This is where SEO becomes very important for all the companies. Also, SEO gives you an advantage for a longer term as you are among the top results for certain keywords. People around the world who want to consume any kind of information regarding those keywords will most likely come to you..The size of opportunity lost by not implementing SEO can be huge for any company who wants to grow and expand around the world.

All this does in no way mean that SMM is in any way inferior to SEO as a marketing technique..It’s just that both have their own sets of advantages. The greatest advantage with SMM as already mentioned is the ability to start a ‘word of mouth’ chain reaction.

Competition and demanding customers make it necessary for Technopologists to ensure that they decide upon an optimal mix of the two in their budgets…

I agree that a lot more things are included in the Search Engine Marketing umbrella…but the importance of SEO must not be diluted when companies put their hands on new incoming techniques such as SMM.

@BlogServices. I don’t agree. 16% is a figure which is very vague. I guess it depends on the industry. Let’s say insurance, mortgage and so on will have a higher budget for SEO activities, not to mention, cars, rentals and travel industry!
